What will merchants do? Just walk around in circles?

Question

What will merchants do? Just walk around in circles?

Answer

Often a merchant class is doomed to very repetitive actions with little to recommend the profession in roleplaying games. Although merchants are usually the richest characters in the game, they are often the most unhappy and bored players. Unless of course they like to be dizzy.

In TSS, we have worked hard to make sure that every character will not only be fun to play, but will also be useful and necessary in the scheme of game life. The merchant is no different. They can indeed trade between cities, towns, and villages bringing goods from one end of the land to the other. Merchants are able to buy goods at a cheaper price because they buy more at once. Just as in real life, a merchant is like a wholesaler. They can open shops where they can sell not only things they bought, but also things that other players make.

They can open auction houses where they can auction their own goods as well as those of others. They can open plazas and squares which will allow them to actually rent permanent stalls and/or storefronts to tradespeople. They can open taverns where they will be able to purchase good food and drink from the local baker and sell it there as well as host bards who will be able to help customers regenerate or learn faster. They can open inns, build houses and rent them out, even loan money to other players through the banking system.

In short, being a merchant should be as fun as anything else in the game. Its all in what you want to do with it. Merchants are all about making money and we are doing our best to give them as many options as possible within the framework of their profession.
