The current trapping system is the alpha version of the system. It is simplified and at the moment, requires no specific skill to use. In the future, Trapping will be a skill and your skill level will determine the types of traps you can use. Eventually, Mechanics and Tinkerers will be able to craft traps. Their skill level will determine what kind of traps they can make and the durability of those traps.
For now, the Alpha Trapping system works as follows:
You can obtain a trap, along with many other useful items, by talking to an NPC in one of the civilized areas. They will let you know what kinds of materials you need to collect and bring to them so that they can construct a trap for you. There are different size traps. The trap size will determine how large of an animalĀ you can catch. Different size animals offer different servings of food.
After you obtain your trap, find somewhere you feel that animals will wander through and:
1. drop trap (Places your trap on the ground. You have 15 seconds to arm it before others are able to pick it up.)
2. arm trap (This arms your trap. Once armed, your trap will not be able to be picked up by anyone but you. It will also say 'Jack's small crude trap' in the area inventory.)
3. Wait. (You can feel free to leave the area, but check back occasionally to see if your trap is sprung.)
When an animal wanders into the room, if the trap is the proper size to catch it, there is a chance the trap will deploy and capture the animal. The animal also has the chance to escape, even if the trap is sprung. If the trap successfully captures the animal, it will kill it and hold it until you come and retrieve it. Your trap also has the chance to be damaged every time it springs whether it catches something or not.
Once a trap is armed, if you want to pick it back up, you will need to disarm it. Typing 'disarm trap' will accomplish this. If the trap is sprung but empty, you can simply pick it up or arm it again.
If the trap contains a corpse, you can remove the corpse by disarming the trap, and typing 'GET CORPSE FROM TRAP'.
